How to Get Everything From Your Vacation
Thinking of another warm spot get-away? Dreams of sunny days,
romantic jaunts on the beach, and long nights at neon dance clubs
doubtless fill your head. But as you make those final plans for fun in
the sun, keep these three things in mind so that your week at the ocean
will not turn into an expensive week in a hotel bed:
* Lather Up With Sun Protection
You're going to hate me, I know. You probably want a deep tan to model
for everyone at work once you get back from your travels. But, you can
do a lot for your long and short-term health and your looks, if you
remember to protect yourself from the sun's damaging rays. This is
especially true if you're traveling in (or near) the tropics. Bring a
protective lotion of SPF 30 that offers protection from UVA and UVB
rays. Cover yourself with it every two hours--more frequently if you're
sweating, swimming or just splashing in the surf. When the activities
allow, put on clothes to help provide additional protection. Remember
though, clothing alone does not give you enough protection. Be aware
that you must use sunscreen even during somewhat cloudy days. The
health repurcussions and the potential skin harm are very real threats.
Instead of the tan, simply share some pictures with your envious
friends at the office!
* Consider Your Food
Whether you are vacationing nationally or in a different country, you
should be careful about what you're consuming. Though local street food
may be inexpensive, interestingly native, and very tempting, it may
have more to it than you bargained for. Food sold at outdoor food carts
is exposed to bacteria that could leave you rushing to the closest
restroom for the remainder of your tour. If you are vacationing abroad,
it is strongly suggested that you avoid salad and unpeeled or uncooked
fruits and vegetables, as the very water that these items are washed
with may have bacteria you're not prepared for. Here are a few tips
that are often neglected: make sure hot food arrives hot; peel all raw
fruits and vegetables; and drink only bottled water (and only if you
hear the seal crack when you open it, indicating that it is a new
bottle).
* Keep Water Handy
Even short periods in the sun will dehydrate you more quickly than you
think, especially if you are not adapted to the climate at your
vacation spot. Drinking the minimum 64 ounces of water every day won't
be enough to keep you hydrated. And no, that pink martini that you plan
to sip all day doesn’t count either. You should be drinking a
minimum of ten (half pint) glasses of water a day to restore your body
while you're in the sun, and even more (twelve to fifteen) if you are
exercising and/or drinking alcoholic drinks. A little dehydration may
not seem like it would matter very much, but it can really zap your
pep. And dehydration left unchecked can lead to headaches, cramps,
stomach problems, and a very tired feeling while severe dehydration can
kill you. Don’t let dehydration take you off the beach or make
you sit out at the dance club: make certain you’re taking in
enough H2O.
As you leave on your travels, keep these important tips in mind.
Remember to be safe, responsible, and to use your thoughtful judgment
as you travel. You can leave your work and worries at home, but
remember to pack your common sense.
