Picking Berries for Jam
She would awaken me early, with a sense of urgency – it was a berry picking morning! Grandma seemed to have a sixth sense about timing the berries just right. Go too early, and the berries are sour, green, and hard. Go too late, and the birds and bear get their share ahead of us! Yes, grandma knew when to go berry picking, and she knew where to go. So, up I sprang, we both would grab our special berry picking baskets that my father had carefully crafted for us. You see, as my grandma patiently explained, you need both of your hands to pick berries with. One hand to carefully lift the end of the plant – which would reveal all of the wonderful – red –jewel like berries, and the other hand to pick them! You cannot be holding onto your basket, grandma exclaimed, if you are to be picking berries! Grandma says that fresh berries are a Gift, and we should not waste them. The Baskets that father made had a hole punched on either side exactly opposite from one another so the basket wouldn’t tip easily. Tie the string through the holes, and run it through the belt loops on your pants and we’re ready to go! As we strolled through the cow pasture to the logging road, I could hear song birds all around – their bright chorus obscured in the morning fog. On to the old logging road, and up the hillside we went with our special baskets in search of those wonderful red jewels. Grandma always went slowly, not because she couldn’t go any faster, but it afforded us the opportunity to see some wildlife on the way as well. This particular morning, we spied a mother whitetail deer with two of this year’s fawns with her. She seemed to sense that we were not a danger to her young ones, and slowly took her fawns up the logging road and over to the wild apple orchard on the hilltop. Then – we were in “the spot”. Grandma smiled, and we went to work picking as many fresh ripe berries as our specially made baskets would hold. Grandma never gave us a glance if we ate as we picked. That was, after all, part of the reward for being there! Neither of us noticed the scratches on our hand from the prickly bushes, but all we could see was our bounty of fresh berries, ready to made into some of the tastiest and best jams and preserves you could imagine. We would often ask for toast as an excuse to eat some fresh berry jam! Some of the best foods you put in a gift basket are right here at home. We hope you enjoy some of nature’s bounty and goodness!
